Amazon confirmed that this year’s Prime Day shopping event will take place in July. Find out what Prime Day is and how you can prepare for one of the biggest shopping events of the year.
Amazon Prime Day is an annual sales event that gives huge discounts exclusively to Prime members. It’s one of the largest sales events of the year, competing with Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Also, it’s a way for Amazon to get more people to subscribe to Amazon Prime.
Prime Day was first launched on July 15, 2015, as a way to celebrate Amazon’s 20th birthday. Amazon’s goal was to offer a volume of deals greater than Black Friday exclusively for Prime members. The first Prime Day event lasted 24 hours, spanning nine countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Canada, and Austria. During the first Prime Day event, Amazon FBA sellers experienced record-breaking unit sales growing nearly 300% worldwide. In 2015, Prime Day generated an estimated $900 million in sales, and there were an estimated 46 million Amazon Prime members.
Since its inception in 2015, Prime Day has grown tremendously. Amazon created Prime Day in 2015 as a 24-hour sales event to boost summer sales and celebrate its 20th anniversary. Since then, Amazon’s annual sale has turned into a 48-hour smorgasbord of deals. Prime Day 2021’s total sales reached $11.2 billion, compared to $10.4 billion in 2020. Prime Day 2021 took place in more than 20 countries, and more than 250 million items were sold worldwide. Currently, Amazon has over 200 million Prime members. There are 157.4 million Prime members in the United States alone.
